Steinhatchee Scallop Season: Dates, Limits & Where to Stay

Steinhatchee is known as the Scallop Capital of the World, and every summer this quiet river town fills with families snorkeling the grass flats for bay scallops. Here’s what you need to know before you go.

When is scallop season in Steinhatchee?

Steinhatchee is in Florida’s Fenholloway through Suwannee River Zone, which opens June 15 and runs through Labor Day each year. FWC can change seasons in any year, so always check the current dates on FWC’s bay scallop page before your trip.

Bag limits

  • June 15–30: 1 gallon whole scallops (or 1 cup shucked) per person; 5 gallons whole (or 2 pints shucked) per boat.
  • July 1–Labor Day: 2 gallons whole (or 1 pint shucked) per person; 10 gallons whole (or ½ gallon shucked) per boat.
  • Boat limits don’t let anyone go over their personal limit.

Licenses and gear

  • You need a Florida saltwater fishing license unless you’re exempt, or you’re wading from shore with a free shoreline license.
  • Harvest by hand or with a landing or dip net only.
  • Follow Florida’s dive-flag rules when snorkeling from a boat (see FWC’s dive regulations).

Where to go

Most families head out by boat from the Steinhatchee River to the grass flats offshore. Prefer to wade? Hagen’s Cove is a favorite for shallow-water scalloping.

Where to stay

The Peach House is a 2-bedroom cottage at Steinhatchee Landing Resort, steps from the resort’s boat docks on the Steinhatchee River. It sleeps 6, with a screened porch, fire pit and grill for cleaning and cooking your catch. Summer weekends book early. Check dates and book direct.
